Hannah was in Kenzie's Mother Day Out class last Spring. Though I have not met her or her parents, Kenzie talked about her A LOT last year and considered her a buddy. We have been praying for Hannah since the end of September because Kenzie told us she was sick. But, we just found out two weeks ago the extent of her illness. Following is the background story from her caringbridge site.
"On Tuesday, Sept. 15, our healthy little girl began running fever. The fever continued Wednesday, along with leg pain. Thursday morning, Hannah woke up crying at 4:30 am, still with fever. After talking with James and my Mom, I decided to make her a doctor's appointment for that day. She had no other symptoms, so we thought it would be smart to have her ears/throat, etc checked. Our wonderful pediatrician decided to do a flu swab and check her blood. After looking at the results of the bloodwork, he told James that he was concerned. I was contacted at school, and I got to the office around 12:30. Dr. Allen explained the test results to us, and said he was worried about a blood disorder or leukemia, and that he had been on the phone with Children's hospital. He told us to go home, get things together, and drive to Children's. After the longest drive of our lives, we got to LR and went to the ER. They repeated the blood work in addition to other labs; before the lab work even came back someone told us that it looked like leukemia. After the labs came in, we heard "leukemia" again. The next day, the diagnosis was confirmed by a hematologist/oncologist, and we just had to wait to find out what type she has. We found out later that afternoon that she has type ALL. The child life specialist here encouraged me to start this site so that everyone can follow Ms. Hannah's progress and offer encouragement and support. Please continue to pray for Hannah as she endures things that children should not have to go through. If you know Hannah Grace, you know that she is strong-willed and smart- now we know why God gave her these traits. Thank you so much for the prayers and support."
Maybe it's because she is so close to Kenzie in age and sounds so similar to Kenzie in her personality and sass, but Brent and I have both become very emotionally involved in keeping up on her status updates and have very heavy hearts for her whole family. :( We will add Hannah and her family to our prayer list. We have had some many families around us lately with little ones with new cancer diagnoses or are at the end of a long fought battle of cancer with their little ones. Their battles have certainly given me some perspective lately when I start to get frustrated with the typical "fun times" that come with a 4 year old and a 1 year old. I am squeezing Hannah and Jacob extra tight tonight as I coast off to bed.
